The Master

Smooth, pleasant, with a dash of darkness, this cocktail recalls the glory days of The Master during his first regeneration cycle; You aren’t sure if it’s your friend or your enemy, but you keep indulging anyway.

DSCN1289

1 oz. Dark Rum

1 oz. Crème de Cacao

1-2 dashes Angostura Bitters

4 oz. Coca-Cola

The Master is The Doctor’s archenemy, a renegade Time Lord bent on becoming “the master of all matter.” A master of disguise and deceit, he is a persistent foe of The Doctor’s, always managing to escape and return with a new plan. He first appears in the series at the end of his regeneration cycle, scheming and elegantly evil. He is eventually forced to appear as a emaciated husk while he attempts to renew his regeneration cycle at the end of his final regeneration. He does manage to succeed in taking over the mind of a Trakenite named Tremas, whose body he wears until he is put on trial and executed by the Daleks (yes, even the Daleks found his crimes to be too evil). The Doctor is then charged with the transport of The Master’s remains from Skaro to Gallifrey, wherein The Master manages to maintain sentience in the form of an ooze (presumably his remains), which crashes the TARDIS. He manages to steal yet another body which is eventually sucked into the Eye of Harmony. Years later, unbeknownst to The Doctor, the Time Lords resurrected The Master in order to make him the ultimate soldier in the Time War, from which he fled and disguised himself as a human on Earth. After finally opening the fob watch which restores his Time Lord DNA, he once again is able to roam the universe in his quest to rule, now a rather deranged man willing to stop at nothing to get his way.

The Master was written for and originally portrayed by Roger Delgado, who debuted the role in 1971 and played it until his unexpected death in 1973 (prompting the departure of Jon Pertwee’s 3rd Doctor, as they were old friends and Pertwee was devastated). Under heavy make-up, the Master was portrayed in “husk” form by both Peter Pratt  (1976) and Geoffrey Beavers (1981),  and as a mind-controlled Trakenite by Anthony Ainley, who played it until the eventually hiatus of the original series in 1989. As the possessed paramedic, Eric Roberts portrays The Master in the TV Film (1996), and in the revived series, The Master is reintroduced in human form by Derek Jacobi (2007) before John Simm took over the reigns for the rest of his New Who appearances (2007-2010).

Romana II – Gallifreyan Lady

Romanadvoratrelundar II

This subtle twist on a vodka martini is not what you expect – its light flavors and delicate color mask a savory, sophisticated cocktail that is sure to be a hit with martini drinkers and Gallifreyans alike.

DSCN1115edit

2 oz. Vodka

½ oz. Dry Vermouth

¼ oz. Triple Sec

7-8 drops Angostura Bitters

Absinthe rinse

Orange twist

Prepare a chilled, stemmed cocktail glass with an absinthe rinse. Add other liquid ingredients to a shaker filled with ice (DO NOT DASH THE BITTERS! ONLY allow 7-8 DROPS of bitters – the drink should be pale orange in color). Mix ingredients and strain into cocktail glass. Add orange twist and serve.

The 2nd incarnation of Time Lady Romanadvoratrelundar (Romana for short) was portrayed by Lalla Ward. Originally assigned to travel with The Doctor on his assignment to collect the Key to Time, Romana and The Doctor form an unlikely friendship and she requests to continue traveling with him after the assignment is completed. Choosing to take the form of Princess Astra of Atrios (after trying on several other forms), Romana I regenerates in the TARDIS during flight. Smart, capable, and just a little bit feisty, Romana II kept the Doctor on his toes as an intellectual equal and an honest companion as they traveled the stars together. Romana II was in the TARDIS for 2 years, from 1979-1981, and only traveled with the 4th incarnation of The Doctor before choosing to forge a life with K-9 in E-Space rather than return to Gallifrey.

The 11th Doctor – Fish Fingers and Custard

Fish Fingers and Custard

DSCN0920edit

1½ oz. Butterscotch Schnapps

1 oz. Maker’s Mark (or other bourbon)

¾ oz. Vanilla Vodka

per 1 c. (8 oz) Eggnog

Store-bought eggnog may be used with this recipe*. Garnish with crushed graham cracker** and two Swedish Fish.

*Proportions for 10 servings of this eggnog: 15 oz. Butterscotch schnapps, 10 oz. Maker’s Mark, 7½ oz. Vanilla Vodka, 10 c. Eggnog

**Crush graham crackers to medium fine – for best results, sift super fine dust out before serving. It’s supposed to look like breading.

The 11th incarnation of The Doctor is portrayed by Matt Smith. Self-described as a “madman with a box,” The Doctor’s 11th incarnation is characterized by a childish whimsy offset by the time-worn loneliness of a 1,000 year old time traveler. Smartly dressed in tweeds and bowties (and occasionally a fez or stetson), the professorial-looking Doctor often throws logic and planning by the wayside, favoring improvised “plans” and jumping into the middle of things (often while yelling “GERONIMO!”) instead of the calculated creativity of his immediate predecessor. Lively, eccentric, passionate, he is often tormented by his loneliness as both the last Time Lord and as a time-traveler whose companions must one day leave him, although he is careful to show them all great affection while he can. The youngest Doctor to date, the 11th incarnation was in the TARDIS for 4 years until his regeneration in the 2013 Christmas special The Time of the Doctor. His companions included Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song, Craig Owens, Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint, Strax, and Clara Oswald.

The 4th Doctor – The Red Jelly Baby

DSCN0730edit

Red Jelly Baby

1 oz cherry vodka

½ oz triple sec

½ oz grenadine

¼ oz peach schnapps

4 oz Sprite

Measure all alcohols and grenadine into a mixer with ice, shake well, add Sprite, and serve in a highball glass either up or on the rocks. Garnish with Jelly Babies.*

*Optional garnish: Skewer 6 Jelly Babies for a mini scarf in the following order: Purple, White, Orange, Yellow, Red, Green

The fourth incarnation of The Doctor was portrayed by Tom Baker. Adorned in baggy clothes, a manic grin, and an enormous scarf, the influence of Baker’s Doctor cannot be overestimated. Disconcertingly whimsical or deadly serious by turns, the fourth incarnation of The Doctor was an unpredictable man of misdirection and great emotional depth. He would use a silly and non sequitur manner to throw enemies offguard, but could express great disdain and anger when rubbed the wrong way. He would carry an array of props in his pockets for various purposes, most famously munching on or offering Jelly Babies to his companions or even his enemies. For many, especially in the US, the fourth incarnation of The Doctor was the Doctor that introduced them to the show, and Baker remained the most popular incarnation until David Tennant showed up over 30 years later. His travels with companion Sarah Jane Smith were considered the Golden Age of the classic series. His iconic scarves continue to enthrall knitters of all ages and his bohemian outfits became, for many people, the quintessential look of The Doctor. The fourth incarnation of The Doctor still holds the record for longest time in the TARDIS, at 7 years (from 1974-1981), and his companions included Sarah Jane Smith,  Harry Sullivan, Leela, K-9, Romanadvoratrelundar (Romana for short) I, Romana II, Nyssa, Adric, and Tegan.

The 1st Doctor – The Grandfather

The Grandfather

Simple, sophisticated, slightly exotic, and with a bit of a bite, this cocktail’s aromatic and intense flavors, like Hartnell’s original characterization of our beloved Doctor, is sure to be a mysterious and necessary addition to your cocktail library.

DSCN0654edit

2 oz Gin (Hendricks or better)
¼ oz Creme de Violette
¼ oz Triple Sec

Shake and strain all ingredients in a chilled stemmed cocktail glass.

Portrayed by William Hartnell, the first and original incarnation of The Doctor appears as a mysterious and curmudgeonly grandfather figure. As the series begins, The Doctor’s granddaughter Susan Foreman is taking classes in then-contemporary London when her schoolteachers Ian and Barbara, intrigued at her unearthly knowledge of math and science, follow her to the junkyard where the TARDIS is disguised as an old police box. The Doctor attempts to run away and unwittingly takes Ian and Barbara back to 10,000 BC. Thus begins The Doctor’s journeys through space and time. The first incarnation of The Doctor was on television from 1963 to 1966, when Hartnell left due to his failing health, prompting then-producer Innes Lloyd to come up with the notion that The Doctor is an alien and capable of changing his appearance. His companions included Susan Foreman (who called him “Grandfather”), Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Vicki, Steven Taylor, Dodo Chaplet, Polly, and Ben Jackson.

The Daleks – The Exterminator

The Exterminator

The ‘Exterminator’ cocktail is NOT for the faint of heart – this deadly drink contains nearly twice the amount of alcohol in a standard Long Island Iced Tea! Though aggressive and ready to exterminate you, this drink  (not unlike the Daleks) is fun and completely addictive.

DSCN0560edittext

1 oz. Light Rum

1 oz. Dark Rum

1 oz. Kraken Black Spiced Rum

½ oz. Agave Nectar

½ oz. Amaretto

½ oz. Triple Sec

¼ oz. Grenadine

2 oz. Orange Juice

2 oz. Pineapple Juice

Pour all ingredients into a mixer with ice, shake well, serve blended or on the rocks in Collins glass with pineapple flag garnish.

The Doctor’s oldest recurring enemy and perhaps the most evil creatures in the universe, the Daleks were created on the planet Skaro by the genius meglomaniac Davros. First appearing in the second ever Doctor Who story, the Daleks were genetically modified from a race known as the Kaleds during a thousand year war against the Thals in an attempt to not only win the war but become the ultimate rulers of the universe. They are a squid-like creature encapsulated by an armored body between 5 and 6½ feet tall. Though defeated over and over by The Doctor throughout the years, the Daleks always somehow managed to spring back to launch another attack on the cosmos. Finally, they turned their attentions towards the Time Lords and waged a deadly Time War – which The Doctor finally ended by Time Locking both the Time Lords and the Daleks, essentially killing them all. The Daleks, however, still managed to survive, and continue to wage war against The Doctor and all non-Dalek life even to this day.

The Daleks were created in 1963 by Terry Nation and designed by Raymond Cusick. They have appeared onscreen with every Doctor to date (except for the 8th incarnation).
