The 8th Doctor

This smooth concoction is a hearty and quirky cocktail, perfect to bring out at parties or for unwinding after a long day.

DSCN1470edit

1½ oz. Whiskey
1½ oz. Spiced Rum
3 oz. Sweet and Sour
¾ oz. Blue Curacao
¾ oz. Lime Juice
1-2 dashes Orange Bitters

Add all ingredients to a mixer filled with ice, shake well, serve up or on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass or Collins glass, respectively. Garnish with a lime wheel and a lime/orange twist.

The eighth incarnation of The Doctor was portrayed by Paul McGann. Suave and eccentric, yet prone to bouts of amnesia, the eighth incarnation of The Doctor is a passionate adventurer and the first Doctor to have romantic relations with his companions. His first appearance on the show was in the 1996 TV Movie, which was intended as a backdoor-pilot to revive the series from ongoing hiatus since 1989. The movie was unsuccessful, therefore when the show was finally revived in 2005 The Doctor had already regenerated into his ninth incarnation, and until 2013 this was the only television appearance of the 8th Doctor. In 2013, the eighth incarnation of The Doctor reappeared onscreen in the mini-sode “The Night of the Doctor,” when he reappears as a weary pacifist, worn down by the effects of the Time War, despite his refusal to participate. It is there revealed that the incarnation portrayed by Christopher Eccleston is not the true ninth incarnation, and between those bodies he did finally fight as a soldier in the Time War.

Despite his lack of television appearances, the 8th Doctor’s adventures are heavily documented in BBC Books’ novels and Big Finish Productions’ audio dramas, as well as other spin-off material. Although the canonicity of the spin-off material is debated, his salute to former companions in “The Night of the Doctor” suggests that the Big Finish audio dramas are considered the “canon” stories. As such, his “official” companions are Dr. Grace Holloway (TV Movie), Charley Pollard, C’rizz, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drew, and Molly O’Sullivan (all Big Finish Productions).

The 11th Doctor – Fish Fingers and Custard

Fish Fingers and Custard

DSCN0920edit

1½ oz. Butterscotch Schnapps

1 oz. Maker’s Mark (or other bourbon)

¾ oz. Vanilla Vodka

per 1 c. (8 oz) Eggnog

Store-bought eggnog may be used with this recipe*. Garnish with crushed graham cracker** and two Swedish Fish.

*Proportions for 10 servings of this eggnog: 15 oz. Butterscotch schnapps, 10 oz. Maker’s Mark, 7½ oz. Vanilla Vodka, 10 c. Eggnog

**Crush graham crackers to medium fine – for best results, sift super fine dust out before serving. It’s supposed to look like breading.

The 11th incarnation of The Doctor is portrayed by Matt Smith. Self-described as a “madman with a box,” The Doctor’s 11th incarnation is characterized by a childish whimsy offset by the time-worn loneliness of a 1,000 year old time traveler. Smartly dressed in tweeds and bowties (and occasionally a fez or stetson), the professorial-looking Doctor often throws logic and planning by the wayside, favoring improvised “plans” and jumping into the middle of things (often while yelling “GERONIMO!”) instead of the calculated creativity of his immediate predecessor. Lively, eccentric, passionate, he is often tormented by his loneliness as both the last Time Lord and as a time-traveler whose companions must one day leave him, although he is careful to show them all great affection while he can. The youngest Doctor to date, the 11th incarnation was in the TARDIS for 4 years until his regeneration in the 2013 Christmas special The Time of the Doctor. His companions included Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song, Craig Owens, Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint, Strax, and Clara Oswald.

The 4th Doctor – The Red Jelly Baby

Red Jelly Baby

1 oz cherry vodka

½ oz triple sec

½ oz grenadine

¼ oz peach schnapps

4 oz Sprite

Measure all alcohols and grenadine into a mixer with ice, shake well, add Sprite, and serve in a highball glass either up or on the rocks. Garnish with Jelly Babies.*

*Optional garnish: Skewer 6 Jelly Babies for a mini scarf in the following order: Purple, White, Orange, Yellow, Red, Green

The fourth incarnation of The Doctor was portrayed by Tom Baker. Adorned in baggy clothes, a manic grin, and an enormous scarf, the influence of Baker’s Doctor cannot be overestimated. Disconcertingly whimsical or deadly serious by turns, the fourth incarnation of The Doctor was an unpredictable man of misdirection and great emotional depth. He would use a silly and non sequitur manner to throw enemies offguard, but could express great disdain and anger when rubbed the wrong way. He would carry an array of props in his pockets for various purposes, most famously munching on or offering Jelly Babies to his companions or even his enemies. For many, especially in the US, the fourth incarnation of The Doctor was the Doctor that introduced them to the show, and Baker remained the most popular incarnation until David Tennant showed up over 30 years later. His travels with companion Sarah Jane Smith were considered the Golden Age of the classic series. His iconic scarves continue to enthrall knitters of all ages and his bohemian outfits became, for many people, the quintessential look of The Doctor. The fourth incarnation of The Doctor still holds the record for longest time in the TARDIS, at 7 years (from 1974-1981), and his companions included Sarah Jane Smith,  Harry Sullivan, Leela, K-9, Romanadvoratrelundar (Romana for short) I, Romana II, Nyssa, Adric, and Tegan.

The 1st Doctor – The Grandfather

The Grandfather

Simple, sophisticated, slightly exotic, and with a bit of a bite, this cocktail’s aromatic and intense flavors, like Hartnell’s original characterization of our beloved Doctor, is sure to be a mysterious and necessary addition to your cocktail library.

DSCN0654edit

2 oz Gin (Hendricks or better)
¼ oz Creme de Violette
¼ oz Triple Sec

Shake and strain all ingredients in a chilled stemmed cocktail glass.

Portrayed by William Hartnell, the first and original incarnation of The Doctor appears as a mysterious and curmudgeonly grandfather figure. As the series begins, The Doctor’s granddaughter Susan Foreman is taking classes in then-contemporary London when her schoolteachers Ian and Barbara, intrigued at her unearthly knowledge of math and science, follow her to the junkyard where the TARDIS is disguised as an old police box. The Doctor attempts to run away and unwittingly takes Ian and Barbara back to 10,000 BC. Thus begins The Doctor’s journeys through space and time. The first incarnation of The Doctor was on television from 1963 to 1966, when Hartnell left due to his failing health, prompting then-producer Innes Lloyd to come up with the notion that The Doctor is an alien and capable of changing his appearance. His companions included Susan Foreman (who called him “Grandfather”), Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Vicki, Steven Taylor, Dodo Chaplet, Polly, and Ben Jackson.

The 3rd Doctor – Man of Action

Man of Action

DSCN0460edittext

2¼ oz ruby port

¾ oz sweet vermouth

½ tsp triple sec

Dash of aromatic bitters

Lemon twist

Pour all ingredients into a wine goblet, stir, add lemon twist and serve without garnish. For best results, twist lemon peel while holding it inside glass.

The third incarnation of the Doctor was portrayed by Jon Pertwee. With his frilled shirts, smoking jackets, and love of Venusian Aikido, Three was a man of action and science. Exiled to Earth and unable to use his TARDIS, he spends much time working for UNIT and driving around in a yellow Siva Edwardian roadster nicknamed “Bessie.” Described as a “Dandy” by his first incarnation, he was always well dressed and ready to either continue diplomatic relations or kick ass, making him the James Bond of an alien-filled Earth. Pertwee traveled for 5 Seasons from 1970-1974 – companions included Dr. Liz Shaw, Jo Grant, and Sarah Jane Smith.
