Valentine’s Day/Gallifrey One Hiatus

Hi Whovians!  Sadly we are not going to be getting a drink up this week (we’re a little shaky on how long those are at the best of times) as mixologist Alex is at Gallifrey One this weekend celebrating his love of Doctor Who.  We’ll have more cocktaily goodness for you next week, but in the mean time I’ll be working to get a full list up of the cocktails we’ve already covered and what might be to come.  We’ll need your input to round out the list so stay tuned!

In the mean time, we hope you’re celebrating your love of Doctor Who today or at the very least celebrating with someone you love.  That sounds worthwhile as well.

If you’re at Gallifrey One, say a big hello to Alex for me if you see him!  He’s sporting some new-and-improved cosplays for you to marvel at. You can also follow his tweets on our Twitter: @DWCocktails

See you next week!

Be sure to ask him for a Jelly Baby too!

The Exterminator--yummy and deadly!

The Exterminator — yummy and deadly!

Welcome, Pinterest-ers!  So glad you like our TARDIS-tini–sorry it has so many various alcohols, but its just so gosh-daleked difficult to get that lovely correct shade of blue.  We’ve got lots of other cocktails we’re sure you’ll love including (but not at all limited to) the First Doctor’s “Grandfather” violet martini, to Ace’s “Nitro-9” bomb, and even a tropical Dalek-inpsired “Exterminator” drink.  Most recently we also posted a holiday video on youtube featuring our egg nog based “Fish Fingers and Custard” drink. You know who that one is for! Yes, we miss him too…

5 Essential Doctor Who Bartending Tools

16 Monday Dec 2013

Posted by Nicole in Bartending Tools

Happy Holidays, Whovians!

Nicole here with a solo update for you!  We hope you’ve been enjoying getting a bit wibbly-wobbly with some of our cocktail recipes, and that you participated in our Scarf Giveaway.  I hear a rumor we might make that one annual!  Alex is hard at work on some new cocktails, but in the mean time we thought we’d help get your kitchen ready for some New Years fun!  Now, tracking down Doctor Who themed bartending supplies is nigh impossible–sorry all you folks who have found our site by searching the key words ‘TARDIS Cocktail Shaker’–nevertheless we’ve put together a short list of items to make your home prepared for an invasion of…er…party guests.  Or the 18th century French royal court?  Ten said they knew how to party.

1.   A Bartending Kit

First things first: You need the proper tools to muddle, slice, shake, strain, and so on.  Your little meat sticks you call fingers are not sufficient.  Apparently when you do a bar tending certification they include a basic kit, (Alex: Actually, I had to purchase mine. Nicole: DETAILS!) but for the rest of us Amazon is an easy source for small bartending kits with the basics.  These two are reasonably priced and include nearly everything you need providing you already have a decently equipped kitchen:

BTK1

24-Piece Kit by Bottles-Up ($49.95)

BTK2

10-Piece Shaker and Bar Tool Set by Oggi ($32.99)

2.   Ice Cube Tray

Ok just heads up that from here on out, ThinkGeek.com has this list on lock.  I’m not bothered, they’re having a big holiday sale right now!  Now then, nothing says, “This is a Doctor Who Cocktail, JUST SO YOU ARE AWARE” like a translucent TARDIS bobbing in your high ball glass.  You can even have Dalek ice cubes to stalk it!  Although we’re not sure an inter species war in your cup would enhance the flavor of our recipes. Nevertheless, your drink will be nice and chilly. Bonus points–the silicone mold can be used to make chocolates or candies!

DWICT1

Doctor Who Ice Cube Tray @ ThinkGeek.com ($9.09 on sale)

DWICT2

3.  Coasters

When your beloved guests/18th century French Court descends upon your humble abode, the last thing you want them leaving behind is water marks on your table!  (Alex: Really? I could think of like, at least a dozen worse things to get left behind)  Ahem, well anyway.  Get some Doctor Who Coasters, you animal. You’re not in college any more for crying out loud.  Or if you are, get a not-horribly-rich-but-comfortable-and-generous uncle.

DWTC1

Doctor Who TARDIS Coasters @ ThinkGeek.com ($9.99)

DWC2

Doctor Who 12 Doctor Coaster Set @ ThinkGeek.com ($29.99)

4.  Glassware

While the designer in me considers nothing quite so elegant as a silk evening gown, fresh snow, or a simple martini glass, I’d be remiss if I didn’t take every measure to make sure your drink advertises to everyone around you that it is a DOCTOR WHO COCKTAIL.  Or can at least pretend as such.  Therefore, this glass should see you through everything from our ‘Nitro-9‘ bomb to a humble brewsky.  It is color-changing, which is neat, but I’m sure you have to provide your own sound effects.

DWPG

Doctor Who Disappearing TARDIS Pint Glasses @ ThinkGeek.com ($19.99)

5.  “Incognito” Beverage Delivery System

While I would never condone taking an alcoholic beverage anywhere you shouldn’t, sometimes you want a not-so-breakable, insulated, incognito beverage holder. That’s all I’m saying.  Don’t read into the fact that I live in the den of all that is publicly boozy: San Francisco.  (Alex: Is it though?  I dunno–commenters?) I mean heck this thing is pretty sweet, you could use it for your every day coffee habit too.

DWTM

Doctor Who 16oz Travel Mug @ ThinkGeek.com ($11.99)

There you are! Five fun ways to get your kitchen ready for your own holiday cheer!  If your holiday cheer involves Doctor Who and fun cocktails. I’m just going to go ahead and assume that’s the case.

-Nicole

The 4th Doctor – The Red Jelly Baby

04 Monday Nov 2013

Doctor, doctorwho, Jelly Babies, TARDIS, Tom Baker

DSCN0730edit

Red Jelly Baby

1 oz cherry vodka

½ oz triple sec

½ oz grenadine

¼ oz peach schnapps

4 oz Sprite

Measure all alcohols and grenadine into a mixer with ice, shake well, add Sprite, and serve in a highball glass either up or on the rocks. Garnish with Jelly Babies.*

*Optional garnish: Skewer 6 Jelly Babies for a mini scarf in the following order: Purple, White, Orange, Yellow, Red, Green

The fourth incarnation of The Doctor was portrayed by Tom Baker. Adorned in baggy clothes, a manic grin, and an enormous scarf, the influence of Baker’s Doctor cannot be overestimated. Disconcertingly whimsical or deadly serious by turns, the fourth incarnation of The Doctor was an unpredictable man of misdirection and great emotional depth. He would use a silly and non sequitur manner to throw enemies offguard, but could express great disdain and anger when rubbed the wrong way. He would carry an array of props in his pockets for various purposes, most famously munching on or offering Jelly Babies to his companions or even his enemies. For many, especially in the US, the fourth incarnation of The Doctor was the Doctor that introduced them to the show, and Baker remained the most popular incarnation until David Tennant showed up over 30 years later. His travels with companion Sarah Jane Smith were considered the Golden Age of the classic series. His iconic scarves continue to enthrall knitters of all ages and his bohemian outfits became, for many people, the quintessential look of The Doctor. The fourth incarnation of The Doctor still holds the record for longest time in the TARDIS, at 7 years (from 1974-1981), and his companions included Sarah Jane Smith,  Harry Sullivan, Leela, K-9, Romanadvoratrelundar (Romana for short) I, Romana II, Nyssa, Adric, and Tegan.

Donna Noble – Ginger Mimosa

Ginger Mimosa

This drink, while being gingery and effervescent like Donna, is what we imagine she would drink 50 of at a bar with The Doctor while on holiday.

DSCN0747edit

Half Champagne

Half Ginger Beer (We like Reed’s Original)

Heavy splash Sweet and Sour

Splash Agave Nectar

Add all ingredients into a champagne flute, garnish with fresh ginger.

Donna Noble was a sassy companion portrayed by Catherine Tate. A temp worker from Chiswick, Donna first meets the tenth incarnation of The Doctor on her wedding day, where her husband-to-be is revealed to be a pawn for the Empress of the Racnoss. After The Doctor saves the day, Dona decides that she is not ready for travel with him and leaves, but is later reunited while investigating Adipose Industries. The Doctor offers once again, and Donna agrees to go with him.

Donna is a fiery red-head with a resourceful nature who is often mistaken for The Doctor’s wife, despite being one of his first companions without a romantic storyline. Though gregarious and feisty, she uses her tough exterior to hide internal feelings of unimportance and inadequacy. She traveled with the tenth incarnation of The Doctor for one season in 2008 before her memories needed to be wiped in order to save her life – she then married a man who loves her and The Doctor anonymously sent her a winning lottery ticket to ensure a stable financial future.

The 1st Doctor – The Grandfather

The Grandfather

Simple, sophisticated, slightly exotic, and with a bit of a bite, this cocktail’s aromatic and intense flavors, like Hartnell’s original characterization of our beloved Doctor, is sure to be a mysterious and necessary addition to your cocktail library.

DSCN0654edit

2 oz Gin (Hendricks or better)
¼ oz Creme de Violette
¼ oz Triple Sec

Shake and strain all ingredients in a chilled stemmed cocktail glass.

Portrayed by William Hartnell, the first and original incarnation of The Doctor appears as a mysterious and curmudgeonly grandfather figure. As the series begins, The Doctor’s granddaughter Susan Foreman is taking classes in then-contemporary London when her schoolteachers Ian and Barbara, intrigued at her unearthly knowledge of math and science, follow her to the junkyard where the TARDIS is disguised as an old police box. The Doctor attempts to run away and unwittingly takes Ian and Barbara back to 10,000 BC. Thus begins The Doctor’s journeys through space and time. The first incarnation of The Doctor was on television from 1963 to 1966, when Hartnell left due to his failing health, prompting then-producer Innes Lloyd to come up with the notion that The Doctor is an alien and capable of changing his appearance. His companions included Susan Foreman (who called him “Grandfather”), Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Vicki, Steven Taylor, Dodo Chaplet, Polly, and Ben Jackson.

Captain Jack Harkness – The Captain Jack

28 Saturday Sep 2013

Posted by Nicole in Cocktails, Companions, Uncategorized

The Captain Jack

This cocktail marries the raw, adult energy that Capt. Jack exudes, as well as maintaining the seductive edge that makes clothing fall off even faster than having 4 hypervodkas for breakfast.

DSCN0526text

4 oz Ginger Ale

1 oz Captain Morgan

1 oz Jack Daniel’s

½ tsp vanilla extract

Ground nutmeg

Optional: ½ oz Tequila*

Mix all liquid ingredients in a highball** glass filled with ice, stir. Dust the top with nutmeg to garnish.

*For an extra kick, add ½ oz Tequila on top.

**For classier look, cut all measurements in half, chill alcohols in a Boston Mixer, add other liquid ingredients and strain into a chilled, stemmed cocktail glass. Add nutmeg garnish and serve.

An unconventional companion, Capt. Jack Harkness is portrayed by Scottish-American actor John Barrowman. An ex-Time Agent from the 51st Century, he first meets The Doctor’s 9th incarnation by attempting to con him. His con unwittingly causes a supernatural epidemic, which he teams up with The Doctor to help solve, who in turn saves Jack’s life. Their travels come to an end when Jack is murdered by the Daleks on Satellite 5. Fortunately for him, Rose Tyler, with the power of the Time Vortex inside of her, brings him back to life, but with a twist: Jack is now immortal. He returns to Earth to become the leader of Torchwood, a team of covert agents initiated by Queen Victoria and designed to handle extra-terrestrial and supernatural happenings on Earth. Jack is a man of action with a penchant for guns and attractive creatures of all genders and species. His very name is a pick-up line. He’s traveled with the 9th and 10th incarnations of The Doctor, as well as starring in his own spin-off series about his adventures as the head of Torchwood.

Ace – Nitro-9

23 Monday Sep 2013

Posted by Nicole in Cocktails, Companions, Uncategorized

Nitro-9

DSCN0517edittext

1 oz Fireball Cinnamon Whisky

Bacardi 151 floater

Half Pint of Coke*

Lighter

To prepare, pour the Fireball into a shot glass, and layer the 151 on top with a bar spoon. Then ignite shot and drop whilst still flaming** into a half pint of Coke.  Chug the entire drink rapidly.

*Substitute Reed’s Ginger Beer instead of Coke if you like ginger and want more spice in your life. (And we’re not just talking about Alex.)

**BE VERY CAREFUL WHILE HANDLING LIVE FLAME! Drinking is no fun when your house burns down. We recommend STARTING the night with this bomb so you’re in your most careful state of mind. It is also recommended you use a glass shot glass (so it doesn’t melt) and a plastic pint glass (so the glass hitting glass doesn’t chip glass shards into your beverage). Drink responsibly!

Dorothy Gale McShane, better known by her nickname Ace, was portrayed by Sophie Aldred. She is companion to the 7th incarnation of The Doctor after meeting him on Iceworld. With a troubled childhood behind her, 16-year-old Ace is a genius with explosives and often carries around several cans of a substance she created from nitroglycerin and gelignite she calls “Nitro-9.” Affectionately calling him “Professor,” she and The Doctor traveled together for 3 Seasons, until Classic Who went on hiatus in 1989.

Clara Oswin Oswald – Clara’s Peach Lemonade

20 Friday Sep 2013

Posted by Nicole in Cocktails, Companions

Clara’s Peach Lemonade

This cocktail is like Clara – the first thing you notice is how pretty and sweet it is, but it comes back and bites you with a clever edge that refreshes and–if you’re not careful–will knock you off your feet.

DSCN0500edittext

3 oz Sweet and Sour

1½ oz Tequila Silver

1 oz triple sec

½ oz peach schnapps

¼ oz grenadine

Pour all ingredients into a mixer, shake well, serve up or on the rocks in a margarita or old-fashioned glass, garnish with a slice of peach.

Clara Oswin Oswald, at first known as the “Impossible Girl,” is a companion of the 11th incarnation of The Doctor and is portrayed by Jenna Coleman. An ordinary girl, she has a habit of ending up in extraordinary circumstances. The Doctor first meets her in the future as a prisoner in the Dalek Asylum and then again in the past as a barmaid doubling as a governess in Victorian London, before finally being given a true opportunity to travel with him. Intelligent, quick-witted, flirty, she keeps The Doctor on his toes as they travel space and time together. Clara was the last companion to travel with the 11th Doctor and is currently in the TARDIS with the 12th Doctor for his second year.
